UK Kitchen Regulations ...

There are a number of regulations governing fitting kitchens in the UK.

Some of these regulations place legal restrictions upon work you can carry out yourself, namely the regulations covering Gas and Electrical installations.

1. Electrical Works

As of Jan 2004 all electrical work carried out in your kitchen has to comply with "Part P", and must be certificated by a competent "Part P" qualified installer

2. Gas Works

For a number of years now work involving any aspect of installing gas appliances, or work that affects the current gas installation, can only be completed by a "Gas Safe" registered gas fitter. (this also applies to changes in ventilation to a kitchen with current gas appliances)

3. Cooker Hoods

As a rule of thumb the minimum distance between the underside of your cooker hood, and the highest point of your hob is:

Gas Hob ... 750mm / Electric Hob ... 650mm

(However, check the manufacturers fitting instructions before installing, some of the big range cooker hoods are now stipulating a minimum clearance of 800mm)
