Fitted Wardrobe Interiors ...

Fitted Wardrobes are generally filled up with the following items:

  1. Hanging space for "Long" clothes
  2. Hanging space for "Short" clothes
  3. Drawers
  4. Shelves

Although it is important to stress that everyone has different requirements for storing items, the following ratio's are a good starting point.

1. Long Hanging

Most people will have some requirement to hang long clothes (Coats, Long Dresses, Trousers by the waistband etc) and this is the standard interior supplied with most freestanding wardrobes (one shelf + one rail - and that's it).
However, should you actually measure the length of rail required for this type of hanging you may be surprised to learn how little long hanging space you need - the average is no more than 60cm.
Due to the height of Fitted Wardrobes the space left under your long clothes is ideally utilised for positioning shoe racks.

2. Short Hanging

The majority of clothes people hang up are short (Blouses, Tops, Skirts, Suits, Shirts, T shirts, Sweatshirts, 3/4 Jackets etc) and the ability to be able to position two such short hanging rails (one above the other) is what differentiates Fitted Wardrobes from freestanding ones.
Doubling up the hanging space in your Fitted Wardrobes dramatically increases your available hanging space, and as a rule of thumb you should aim to have at least four times as much short hanging as long hanging.
It is worth checking that your supplier allows for at least 100cm of "drop" between the rails, which will allow clothes to hang freely in each compartment.

3. Drawers

The only real requirement for placing drawers into your fitted wardrobes is for the storing of underwear.
(The idea being if you dramatically increase your available hanging space your need for drawer space reduces accordingly). Most people prefer to hang clothes rather than fold them and place into drawers.
Normally there is no need for an average couple to need more than a 40cm wide 4 drawer chest each - and even then one of these shared between two people is often enough.

4. Shelves

Shelves are a useful way of storing folded clothes (Jumpers etc) and bulky items that you do not want to go into the loft.
It is worth placing a set of shelves about 40cm wide (often over a drawer pack) into your Fitted Wardrobe as this is the ideal width for storing folded Sweaters, T Shirts, Sweatshirts etc.
Placing some longer shelves into your Fitted Wardrobe is a useful way of storing larger items such as Suitcases, Photo albums, General Paperwork etc.

Please note ... it is unlikely you will ever need more than 3 Double Wardrobes (the example above will provide up to 3.5m of hanging (An average couple with two freestanding wardrobes will only have 1.6m - less than half the amount) together with a fair amount of shelving.
